Mr. Las Vegas will be here this Saturday, February 9 (snag your tickets here). Before we roll out the red carpet for this incredibly talented man, let’s learn more about who he is.
A quick google search will lend us a few facts about Wayne Newton. For starters, did you know Mr. Newton’s birth name was Carson Wayne Newton? His grassroots take us back to Virginia where his musical journey began. By the age of six Newton was learning the piano, guitar, and steel guitar. When the family moved to Ohio, Newton began singing in local clubs, theaters, and fairs with his older brother. In 1952, Wayne’s severe asthma forced the family to move to Phoenix, AZ (hooray Arizona – local plug).
In the spring of 1958, toward the end of Wayne’s junior year in high school, a Las Vegas booking agent saw a local TV show, Lew King Rangers Show, on which the two Newton brothers were performing. The agent took them back to Las Vegas for an audition. The brothers were originally signed for a two week gig, however they performed for five years, doing six shows a day. By 1963, Wayne Newton was a solo act. Wayne’s break into the glamorous world of Las Vegas lead to wild success in the music industry and turned him into an icon of Las Vegas
