Improv – More Than Being Funny

Improv Intensive!

It isn’t all about being funny! It’s a learning experience!

Actress and Comedian, Kristen Wiig, from shows such as SNL and movies like Bridesmaids,  stated, “With improv, it’s a combination of listening and not trying to be funny.”

Improv is known throughout theatre for its use in comical performances. Although that statement is true, improv is much more. Improv is about responding to action and ideas quickly and cleverly on the spot. Improv emulates the idea of flow; which is about motivation, imagination and spontaneity. Flow is keeping the conversation alive, staying involved and knowing how to grasp a concept and create new ideas that help expand them.

This summer season, Chandler Center for the Art’s is offering our first ever Improv Intensive just for teens. This course will not only give teens the opportunity to learn how to present humor to an audience, but they will also gain the knowledge to improve their listening and responding skills to verbal and nonverbal cues. The material covered throughout the week will be a key factor in enhancing future experience in the academic and professional world.

Actor, Nathan Fillion, who has been in films such as Saving Private Ryan and also the voices for characters in Monsters University and the Halo video games said, “Improv as an actor makes you present in the moment. You listen, you’re attentive. You’re not acting so much as reacting, which is what you’re doing in life all the time.”

Come and join the fun with your fellow peers in enjoying the art of theatre and performance! Learn more about Improv Intensive here.

February is Fantastic

February is just around the corner. The month is full of celebration, love and of course great shows. Before we know it, Valentine’s day will be here. So now is the time to pre-plan how you will celebrate this month. How about a fantastic show at the Arts Center? Yes, we think it is a brilliant idea as well.

The first weekend in February kicks off with death defying stunts, twisting contortionists. precision stunts and jaw dropping acts. The Golden Dragon Acrobats represent the best of a time honored tradition that began more than twenty-five centuries ago. The Golden Dragons are recognized throughout the United States and abroad as the premiere Chinese acrobatic touring company of today. This show is sure to be filled with traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty. Purchase tickets here.

The following weekend, on February 9, Mr. Las Vegas (Wayne Newton) will entertain our audience. Wayne has performed live, at last count, to more than 30 million people. He has epitomized the talent, glamor and energy that are Las Vegas. He is a master at showmanship. He sizes up audiences as he goes, tailoring shows to fit their moods, until he’s given them their money’s worth. The songs change and the show gets re-worked, but Wayne’s basic approach is the same. Wayne says, “I know what it means to save your money to go see someone perform, and I’ll work as hard as I have to, to try and make sure they enjoy it.” Purchase tickets here.

Prepare your abs for some laughing as we approach the 15th of February. The Southern 6’2” Hall of Fame speaker, Jeanne Robertson, will tickle your funny bone.  Jeanne is a professional speaker who specializes in hilarious humor based on her life experiences. Speaking  to thousands of people annually, she utilizes her positively funny style to illustrate that a sense of humor is much more than a laughing matter. It is a strategy for success. She believes that this humor attitude can be developed and improved, and she outlines how to do so while captivating audiences with funny, original stories. Purchase tickets here.

The following day, February 16, the Pushcart Players take the stage an all-new production of “Happily Ever After… A Cinderella Tale.” It is known to most of us as “Cinderella,” but they’ve named it “Happily Ever After…A Cinderella Tale.” It seems that we are never too old, nor do we ever grow tired of hearing this beloved story. Perhaps it is because it’s about overcoming adversity…about dreaming dreams and about goodness, generosity and compassion. And, perhaps because it’s also about things that can help us learn and grow, such as the unbecoming nature of bully behavior; the importance of making good choices and being responsible for the choices we make. Whatever the reasons, audiences love the music, the magic and the funny, beautiful and zany characters in our story. It’s a wondrous journey from long, long ago – to happily ever after.  Purchase tickets here.

As we jump into the next weekend, don’t let those abs go soft.  Emmy Award winning comedienne, Vicki Lawrence, and Mama will be here. Vicki is one of the most beloved television personalities of her generation as a part of the now-legendary cast of the Carol Burnett Show. Ms. Lawrence will take the stage first. “We have designed a show that is a mixture of stand-up comedy, music and my observations about real life.” When “Mama” takes the stage next, Ms. Lawrence says, “I think people will get a kick out of the things “Mama” has an opinion about. Where “Mama” is concerned, expect the unexpected. There’s really nothing she can’t do,” she says. Purchase tickets here.

And to finish off the month we will celebrate with a day full of food. February 26 is Eat Your Art Out Chandler.  This is a community event that brings together Chandler restaurants, arts patrons and corporate sponsors for one day to show their support for the arts in Chandler. Funds from Eat Your Art Out Chandler support various programs at the Center including headline entertainment, the Free Summer Concert Series and the Connecting Kidz programs. Restaurants help by donating a percentage of their proceeds to the Chandler Center for the Arts on that day. You help by eating at one or more of the participating restaurants.

So pull out your calendar and “pencil” us in. February is bound to be a great month.

Run Away to the Circus

Zoppe 013Ready to run away to the circus? If so, you are in luck! The Zoppé Italian Family circus is coming to Chandler Center for the Arts on December 26. The circus will be in town until Jan. 5, 2013.

Although it might not be a “permanent escape” the show will allow you to run away from your daily to-dos and be swept away by the acrobatic feats, equestrian showmanship, canine capers, and clowning around. So pack your bags  (more like pack up the car with your friends and family) and head over to the big white and blue striped tent.

Zoppe 010As soon as you arrive, you are instantly transported to the old Italian circus world. People are bustling around, the smell of popcorn wafts though the air,  circus music plays in the background, and excitement abounds. The performers enter the ring and you can bet your inner child will emerge. You will laugh, you will cry, you will be on the edge of your seat! Before you know it you are lost in the magic of the circus.

As the show comes to an end you might find yourself asking Giovanni Zoppe, the sixth-generation circus performer who plays Nino the clown, if you can join the circus.  Today could be your lucky day.

Either way, make sure you run away to the Zoppé Italian Family circus this season, even if it is just for a day!
